The American flag is a symbol of our American values, at whose core are freedom and liberty for all.  The flag itself is not sacred.  To make it sacred is to make it an icon, and that is idolatrous.  What is sacred are the ideas expressed in the three documents on which this country was founded: The Bill of Rights, the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.  Ours is the only country in the world that was founded on such noble and empowering ideas!

Values of tolerance, religious and political asylum, and the right to freedom of speech are at the essence of our beloved country's sacred documents.  Aren’t we lucky, indeed blessed, that as Americans we have these rights—including the right to express our diverse opinions?!
